Queen Mary University

Queen Mary University of London (informally Queen Mary, QMUL or QM) is a public research university located in London, United Kingdom and a constituent college of the federal University of London. With roots dating back to the founding of the London Hospital Medical College in 1785, Queen Mary was formed by the merger of four historic colleges, and since joining the University of London in 1915 has grown to become one of its largest colleges.

Queen Mary's main campus is located in the Mile End area of the East End of London, with other campuses in Holborn, Smithfield and Whitechapel. It has around 17,000 full-time students and 4,000 staff[3] and an annual turnover of £350 million, of which around £100 million is from research grants and contracts. Queen Mary is organised into three faculties – the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry – within which there are 21 academic departments and institutes. Around 20 per cent of Queen Mary's students come from outside the UK.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, Queen Mary was ranked 11th by The Guardian and 13th by Times Higher Education out of the 132 UK higher education institutions assessed. In 2014, Queen Mary was positioned 35th among 130 UK universities in the Complete University Guide and 36th according to the Guardian University Guide. The 2013-4 QS World Rankings placed the university 115th of 700 universities worldwide and 19th in the UK, while the 2013 Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Rankings of World Universities placed Queen Mary in the top 30 in the UK and in the top 201-300 bracket worldwide. There are five Nobel Laureates amongst Queen Mary's alumni and current and former staff.

Life on campus

Set away from the Mile End Road and set beside the beautiful Regent's Canal, you would be forgiven for thinking that you were no longer in busy London when on campus. Students live in the award winning Westfield Student Village, only a few minutes' walk from all of our social and teaching facilities. They can enjoy the tranquil surroundings of campus and yet can be in the centre of the City in minutes.

On campus, nothing is ever more than a few minutes away. Students living in the Westfield Student Village are only a five-minute walk from the Students' Union bar and any lecture theatres – perfect for those 9am starts!

Queen Mary also boasts one of the most active Students' Unions in London. They run over 100 clubs and societies and organise regular social events at the recently refurbished Drapers' Bar, so our students are never bored here. For the more athletically inclined, the recently opened campus Health and Fitness Centre offers a wide range of exercise classes and industry standard gym equipment for use by our students.

Our cosmopolitan student body is often described as the friendliest in London. With over 15,000 students on a single campus, our students can socialise with people from all walks of life; we are proud to boast a student body that is both national and international in its makeup. No one day is ever the same for our students and with so much to do on campus, it is no surprise that they are more than satisfied with their time here.
