Queen Mary research in focus

Queen Mary is proud of its rich history in academic research and we pride ourselves on involving the vast majority of our teaching staff in important research. Find out here how Queen Mary ranks in the  most recent Research Excellence Framework here.

In the video below you can find out about from Queen Mary academics from the School of History about their research that led to the discovery of what is believed to be the oldest tea in Britain. The dried green tea was acquired in China, around the year 1700, by ship’s surgeon James Cuninghame, who subsequently gave it as a gift to the famous physician and collector of curiosities, Hans Sloane. In this video, the research team discuss the significance of their discovery and their work as historians of Britain's favourite drink.

The British are famous for their tea drinking habits and drink vast amounts, but tea was an expensive and exclusive drink until the eighteenth century.

What do current IFP students think of the IFP?

We asked our current September-start IFP students to reflect on their experience on the IFP at Queen Mary. lecture

Here are some of their thoughts:

I honestly did not have too many expectations about the IFP. I just viewed it as a hurdle before I could attend university. However, it has had an extremely positive and significant impact in my life. I have learned to be more independent not just with my studies but with taking care of myself and [learning to] enjoy responsibility and freedom at the same time. Fariha Rahman, Bangladesh

I didn’t expect the university to be so attentive with every student. There was much more support than I had anticipated and feedback is given regularly. This program exceeded my expectations. Sandreen Sewidan, Egypt

Overall, the International Foundation Programme was a great experience. All of the modules required us to think critically. The modules also incorporated group activities in the course. This helped the students to learn how to work well in teams which is a useful skill that can help students in their future studies. The IFP has also taught students to do research properly and how to write academic essays. Sikander Hayat Khan, Pakistan

Independent Student Project Essays

In their second semester at Queen Mary, all International Foundation Programme students do a research-based Independent Study Project (ISP) which includes a portfolio to track their progress, an oral presentation and a final essay. As Peter Latham, the Convenor for English Language and Study Skills on the IFP explains:

"The objectiveStudents in the library of the ISP is to provide students with an opportunity to apply everything they have learnt in terms of English Language and Study Skills to an academic topic of their choosing. Many IFP students really enjoy the opportunity to get their teeth into something that really interests them. Students receive extensive guidance from their English teachers throughout the process."

Find out here about the ISPs carried out by one group of IFP students this year.

Debate with King's College London

Each year there is a debate between Queen Mary's International Foundation Programme students and those from King's College London. You can find out about this year's debate here.
