Cindy Kasks Advice

Body language and confidence is the biggest player when presenting in front of a large group of people.  Once you are confident and you seem comfortable with your body language you immediately let the audience feel confident about your topic and at ease.

Make sure that also you have revised and at this point do not have to look at the slides. This adds on to the confidence level you are propelling and make you look professional.  Also make sure the presentation has a clear structure and make the slides pleasant to look at otherwise if there is too much text the audience will be overwhelmed.

Ilia Iliaguev's advice

There are several key points for making a proper academic presentation. First of all, you have to plan your time effectively and make sure that you are prepared to talk about the chosen subject with enthusiasm and passion. You definitely should know the subject inside out, as the audience might have certain questions in the end of the presentation. Furthermore, you should establish and maintain an eye contact with the audience and make them properly engaged. Another important aspect is including relevant diagrams and pictures, which will be a lot more informative than plain text and will result in more interest from the audience.

Lauren Schaefer's Presentation Advice

One of the most important aspects of delivering an academic presentation is to have clear organisation and to stay focused on the subject. Remember to engage with the audience to attain their attention and ensure they are able to understand your topic. It is also important to speak with enthusiasm and avoid mumbling and speaking in monotone. It makes a difference when a speaker presents with poise, clear volume, confidence and passion because the audience is more likely to stay focused. Eye contact is significant as well in a presentation because you want to avoid reading off the slides.

Serhan Ekinci's Advice

My advice to make a good presentation would be to have the audience captivated not captive. A presenter could do this by having the audience first all question the topic by asking them questions that they do to have answers to or giving them examples they do not understand fully  but will after the presentation.

Saleema's advice

Confidence is the most important aspect of public speaking. Confidence comes with patience and practice. It is important to have a clear voice, look at the audience in the eye and not to stand still during the whole presentation.  In order to grab the audience's attention you need to relate to the audience, ask questions, collaberate and make sure they understand what your trying to conclude. The format of the presentation is very important as well, people like to see more images and color rather than a slide filled with a long paragraph. Do not go off topic and make sure you break down everything thats being stated.

Isabella Pesina's Advice

I believe that the best advice for someone who is going to be working on an academic presentation is to work on reading you audience. By this I mean that the presenter should analysis  their audience to insure that they are interested and involved in the topic you are talking about. This is important because if the presenter has lost the interest of their audience, the rest of their presentation becomes, in a way, pointless. A good presenter, even if the topic does not appeal to the audience, can keep the attention of the audience if reading them properly.

Silvio Pina's advice

There are few fundamental steps to follow in order to achieve a successful presentation:

-Show passion for the topic you are presenting and try to connect with your audience (while talking to the audience you have to be honest and tell them the reason why this given topic is important to you and the reason why it should matter to them).

-The message that you are trying to pass on to your audience should be simple and possible to communicate through key words.(While talking to the audience keep emphasizing your message)

-The beginning of the presentation more specifically the introduction is crucial to attract the audience’s attention.

-Another feature of the presentation which must be highlighted is the eye contact. By smiling to the audience and making eye contact the presenter is acquiring the attention of the audience. Another benefit of the eye contact technique is that it helps the audience to connect with the presenter, by connecting with the presenter the audience is most likely to follow the presenter’s reasoning. Furthermore, the eye contact is a truly efficient way to control the stress, which in many cases overtakes the presenter and diminished drastically the impact of the presentation upon the audience.

-Story telling is another very powerful tools which must be used in order to attract attention. By using stories in the presentation the audience is more likely to engage and memorize crucial information.

Mustajab's advice

For starters, choose a topic that interests you, personal involvement and motivation are key to confidence and vigour. Following your preparation, in the actual presentation an engaging introduction must be introduced with eye-catching visual affects. This will allow you to capture the audience's attention.

In general, give your presentation a clear and logical organization so that everyone can follow. Present information visually- this adds interest to your talk and makes it easier to follow. Practise giving your presentation until you are familiar with the key points; this way you may discover any potential problems an check the timing. Besides, practice will also make you feel more confident. Rehearsal is key.

Kieran Mehra's Advice

I believe that the most crucial piece of advice to keep in mind whilst publicly speaking is your presence. It is important to keep the attention of your audience, which you can do through humour, engaging the audience, and speaking freely, as opposed to reading directly from a piece of paper or presentation.

Parsa's Advice

Ensure that you pace yourself while doing the presentation in order to engage with the audience;  avoiding rushing or speaking very slowly as it would make the presentation tedious

Phillipe's Presentation Advice

From all the presentations I have seen at QMUL so far, there are many things I see students do that make the presentation great, whilst there are some things that let the presentation down. Good body language (hands movements, correct posture, eye contact) play a big factor in how a presentation goes. You are the main source of information for the audience who will be looking at you most of the time so make sure that you look professional and presentable. Secondly you should make sure that you are well organised and your presentation has a clear structure and focus. This is very important as I have seen students who have failed to deliver a structured presentation that lacked focus - this led to the audience losing interest as the presentation didn't have a clear direction. businessman-2.jpg

Omran's Advice

There are many factors a person should consider in order to deliver a good presentation. For a good presentation, one should start by studying the subject before presenting it. Showing a wider understanding of the subject will educate the audience on your subject. Secondly, a good presentation requires an organized structure. A structure that would start with an introduction which will state the main discussion of the presentation and the points to be covered. In addition, a formal language should be used while presenting your presentation.

Yara's Advice

Essentially, the most important factor is engaging with your audience and keeping them interested in the topic being discussed. Ask questions, make eye contact, pace yourself, and don't bore them with huge chunks of text if your using a powerpoint presentation.

Rita's advice

In my opinion the most important aspect to take into consideration when making a presentation is to remain focused. When speaking in public, either to a small or big audience, it is normal for the speaker to feel anxious and apprehensive and to avoid this, the presenter must keep focused on the topic and be prepared to carry out the presentation ensuring the audience is captivated. If the speaker isn’t focused on the audience or the presentation itself the addressees will be able to notice it and might interpret this as lack of confidence or passion for the theme and will feel disconnected to the presentation. Bear in mind that preparing ahead on improving communication skills such as slower-paced speaking, maintaining eye contact and interacting with the audience is crucial for a good presentation which complemented by conducting extensive research on the theme will help you feel more prepared and comfortable when speaking in public about the topic which will be noticeable by the audience.
