'My QMplus' module list
17 September 2014, 13:12
Hello
I have had a large number of e-mails all on the same theme since the new look QMplus landed on Tuesday: 'where are my modules?'; 'I cannot find module X in my list, please can you put it back'; 'I cannot see all my modules anymore'.
I think what is going on is that the 'My QMplus' module list that users see upon login has been capped to 6 modules whereas it previously listed all modules that a user was enrolled on. Clicking on 'All modules', however, takes the user (or at least it takes me) to the categories rather than my complete module list.
The work around that I am e-mailing people is to click 'Dashboard'>'My QMplus'>'Show all modules'.
Is there a plan already in place to address this? If not, please can there be one? Because the e-mails will keep coming in, I am sure! For what it's worth, I think 6 modules is an optimistic cap for even the most basic user. Undergrad students would have at least that number plus a number of additional QMplus course areas e.g. 'law student info', various extra-curricular courses and pastoral support. In the idea world, students could perhaps pick their 'favourite' courses for that area or the list should be expanded a bit... and the 'all modules' link should take them to the page that I get to via the work around above.
In the mean time, perhaps a message should go out to all users to tell them how to see all their modules - I can't be the only one getting these e-mails!
Thanks
Helene

Hi,
I have had the same issue down here and have emailed the same solution to people!
I was thinking about sending out an email to all our users with this solution.

Dear Ben & Helene
The plan is to replace the browse modules block with a 'my recent courses' plugin. This would display the 6 most recently clicked on modules.
We did not have enough time to get this onto the system and is expected in a release later this semester.
What I did instead was limit the number of modules displayed in the browse modules block to 6. We had had so many complaints about the length of the block etc.
Students can navigate to My QMplus following the prominent link to My QMplus (below my files) or as you have said via the my dashboard link.
We would like to be able to filter MyQMplus by courses you are directly enrolled on and courses you are e.g.a. viewer on ..and to give you the flexibility to move courses around here. This is development work and will not be done immediately.
Another approach that works for those with a 'landing page' is the 'Dashboard' block.
This is an extremely useful block that shows you your most recently assessed modules/courses. Usually it is configured to around 6 but can be increased. If staff would benefit from having access to the dashboard then you could enrol them on the landing page to and show them how to select it on their profile page.
I hope this info helps

Thanks Brett.
I'd concur with Ben and Helene that this change has caused confusion for many users, although I can see the point that you're making. Might a future release of the block allow an editor to customise the maximum number of modules that are displayed in a given instance? In other words, so you could stick to 6 on the QMplus Home Page, but we could extend it to 20 on the SED Home Page (although having said that we're now enjoying the improved Dashboard ...)?
An unrelated point, but something I noticed en route to this forum, is that the button link to 'My Groups and Portfolios' on QMplus seems to have been killed, and now just points to "http://qmplus.qmul.ac.uk/#".
Best wishes,
Richard

Hi Richard,
We too have had many users confused. This is a key time for us with lecturers making final changes to courses starting next week.

Hi Richard
I have fixed that Groups & Portfolios link.
Secondly the final part of the homepage enhancement will put a 'My recent modules' tab on the logged in home page...this will be something like the module dashboard's 'My modules' tab.
The other point to note is that we now have 23 landing pages in the system covering almost all students the landing pages in S &E and HSS have the Module dashboard on them enabling students to navigate easily to their most clicked on modules/courses. If staff are also enrolled on those pages they can enjoy the benefits of that block too. Traffic to the logged in homepage traffic will reduce dramatically over time.
Anyway thanks for the feedback.

I have sent the following message out to our School.
Dear Colleagues,
A recent update has replaced the full list of modules on the right of QMplus with a smaller module list of only six items. Unfortunately selecting 'All modules ...' at the bottom of this MY QMPLUS section on the right of QMplus does not take you to all of your modules. There are then several more pages you need to click through to get to them. The QMplus team plan to change this for the better in future updates.
A work around is to go to MY DASHBOARD, My QMplus, and then select Show all modules at the bottom of the page. This will show you all the modules you teach and have access to. It may also be worth bookmarking your My QMplus page qmplus.qmul.ac.uk/my, along with other QMplus areas you look after until things are improved.

Dear colleagues,
Earlier this week you raised concerns about the 'My QMplus' block on the QMplus logged in page.
We apologise for the inconvenience the change caused. We have added a message to the 'QMplus News' block, located underneath the 'My QMplus', to highlight that users should click on the 'My QMplus' link, located to the right of the screen, to view all their courses (view message here: http://qmplus.qmul.ac.uk/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=44093).
Currently the 'All Modules' link that appears at the bottom of the 'My QMplus' block, will allow users to browse all available modules in the QMplus site (which they can access). Most students who log in are directed a Landing Page where the 'Dashboard' block replaces the 'My QMplus' block, and this displays 10 courses with a 'view all my modules' link which takes them to view all their courses. See image below.
We are working to see if can change the 'All Modules' link to link to only modules which you are enrolled on, but this would remove the ability to view all modules in the QMplus site.
The modules list was reduced to address the number of complaints we received previously that the list was too long. We do take on board your comments that it would be better to have a list of more relevant modules available, or the ability to customise this list, and as Brett mentioned previously, there will be development work in place for this.
I hope this helps.
Alysa

Thank you Alyssa - hopefully that should pre-empt some of the e-mails!
