Course Meta-Link and Self Enrolment Options, and roles
09 October 2014, 18:35
Hello everyone,
I'm running into a problem with a module when using the course meta-link or self-enrolment enrolment methods. These both seem to work fine for adding users to the site - they get on there as expected - but the users don't have a role assigned.
I'm not sure how the feature is designed to work, but I'd assumed that anyone who self-enroled would automatically get a certain role (e.g. student), and that I would be able to specify the role for meta-link enroled users.
This creates an odd situation whereby students can get on a site because they are enroled, but then they can't do some things (submit assignments, post to forums) because they have no role to grant them the permissions to do this.
In some cases this could involve hundreds of students, so adding the roles manually isn't an option if I want to stay sane!
I feel like I might be missing something - has anyone else encountered this? Or am I just misunderstanding how the functionality works?
Thanks,
Chris

So we run a course which makes use of both meta-course enrollements for students to have a viewing role and also cohorts for staff enrollments.
This ran sucessfully last year, so yes this as functionality works, but this all fell down aroudn upgrade/rolloover having similar problems to yours - I understand were solved by re-doing the enrollment ie: removing the link and then reinstating it.
With metacourses also check the role the students are given in that to ensure that they are being given the role there you expect
Hope that this helps

Hi Chris,
If I have understood correctly, the course meta-link enrolment, this method should pick up whatever role the user was enrolled on in the other course. So if they were enrolled as students in the first course and you used the course meta link enrolment method, they should be enrolled onto the second course with the same role. If that hasn't worked, then you should raise a ticket with the course details for them to investigate.
With self enrolment, you can set which role you want the 'self enroller' to have when they enrol. So you should be able to choose if they will self enrol as a teacher, student, viewer etc. There are lots of other settings available if you allow self enrolment - such as if their enrolment will expire, if they need a password etc. and these are available under the settings for self enrolment. You should get these options as an administrator?
