Submission extension flags
04 February 2015, 15:20
I teacher brought up the feedback of being able to set an extension flag against a student on an assignment area. Along with being able to set how long that extension is, and perhaps an enable notifications option, for once a submission is actually made.
As an example which would apply to our Department, this flag could be set by our extenuating circumstances officer, who has approved an extenuating circumstances claim, and in so doing, a teacher who then goes to their assignment area is able to see clearly which students have really been late in their submission, and which have been awarded extentions.
I am unable to think through the implications, or indeed the usefulness of such an feature as much as I'd like to, so I put it out here.
Is there even a round about way of doing this now?

Hi Hassan,
I'm not sure if this would meet your needs but the QMplus assignment type has a "Grant Extension" function. You'll find it in the grading table for the assignment.
If you are using a Turnitin assignment, this feature isn't available

Just to follow up on the slightly terse response I gave last week and give a bit more information.
Extensions can be granted by those with Course Administrator or Teacher rights on the course area. It may be possible to tweak permissions to restrict who is able to grant extensions if you need something more fine tuned.
The screenshot above shows the grading table for an assignment. The first student submitted their assignment after the due date but has an extension so shows in green as having submitted on time. The second student submitted on time. The third student submitted after the submission due date but does not have an extension so is showing as having submitted late.
It is possible to set up assignments to send notifications when late submissions are made but it isn't possible to limit this only to students who have been granted extensions.
Hope this is useful.

Thank you Gill, that is useful.
Then of course there is the Notify graders about submissions option. Which I can present to our teachers as an option they can enable (for example: enabled after the overall assignment cut-off date), in order that they then begin to receive notification for student submissions, who have been granted that extention.
I see this as now covering our needs in this area, thanks again.
