WIKI Logs
09 October 2012, 10:29
Dear All,
I have been trying to work with the Wiki tool to get students on a fairly large module to post regular academic reading/reviews. This wiki is a private one, for each student to have their own personal space (essentially a private journal/blog, but QMPlus doesnt have this function at the moment). The key to this is for me to be able to access a weekly digest of all the student posts so that I can provide formative feedback on a regular basis to the group. However, I cannot seem to get this information, and at the moment have to select each individual student to see whether they have posted anything. For a module with over 60 students, this is taking hours of time, and does not allow me to consider the whole group in one go.
Can anyone help here with trying to extract a weekly digest for the whole group? I've tried looking at the 'logs' section, but this does not seem to work properly, in that I can only see my own posts and edits!

Hi Simon,
After accessing the wiki, select the 'Logs' tool under Wiki Administration. This will give you access to a series of filters (group/participants/day) which will let you see logged activity.
In the example below, I have filtered to see members of the 'Friday Seminar Group' across all days and activities, where they have taken action to 'add' content to the course (e.g. creating and adding a forum discussion).
For more information on the use of the log tools, try here:-

Dear Lawal,
Yes, I have tried that approach already, and here is what I get! If I set it also to 'all days', I get the same...
I know that students have posted materials, but this is not being captured in the logging process. Does anyone know why the Wiki data isn't being captured, as it is getting very frustrating!
Cheers,
Simon

Dear Simon,
I couldn't see your image initially.
Instead of using the following settings:-
Course (GEG4209), Groups (all groups), Participants (all participants), Date (Today), Activities (Personal Journal Review Space), Actions (all actions), Display (on page)
Try changing the activities from Personal Journal Review Space to All activities and the date to All days.
You should start to see results of all activities listed.
From here, filtering the actions by add will show you when anyone has added new content. This will include activity performed by academics attached to this course.
If you combine this filtering with student seminar groups, this should remove staff activity (as long as they are not members of the seminar groups) at the least reveal students who have started the exercise that you set them. This is because adding discussion topics is one of the few ways that students can add content to a course area.

Dear Lawal,
Nope! Still doesn't show. Going through this process fails to capture ANY updates or additions to the Wiki. All the other activities are there, but nothing for the wiki. I have spent too much time dealing with this issue already, and have come NO NEARER to any form of resolution for this. Really not impressed.
For a system that was installed for pedagogic and educational reasons, it seems ridiculous that we are unable to offer an activity that was so straightforwards to do wihtin BlackBoard, and that has such high educational benefit in providing clear and evident formative feedback.

Dear Simon,
Looking at the log tool, it seems that the information is stored (as it appears when no filters are applied) but when called on through some filters it is not displayed.
An alternative solution would be to apply minimal filters:-
Then download the logs (download in excel format) and filter for the results in Excel.
e.g. Wiki Logs Example download
Hope that helps in the meantime.
