Will the Footprints function return- Function to click into all sections of previous open tabs without clicking the back button
09 October 2015, 12:06
Hello All
Will the Footprints function return?
I am not sure if this is the correct term used.
This function enabled you to be able to click into a book or page (all different sections) of previous opened tabs/ books selected without clicking the back button. The hand tool used to appear and you could just click.

Dear Samantha,
I have to admit that I'm not sure what the function is that you are referring to. Since it's no longer there, it's slightly problematic to ask for an example!
Could you possibly give a specfic example of a book somewhere on QMplus where this feature used to appear?

Hello Gill,
I do not know if that was what the function was called. It could be used anywhere in QMpluls.
For example I would click into a course, then navigate and click into a document or a chapter and then select a book in the chapter. If I wanted to go back to the beginning of the chapter or beginning. I could click at the top where you would see all of the links to the pages you had clicked to where you were currently and click back by just click into one of the sections at the top of the page instead of clicking the back button.

- CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR NEUROSCIENCE / ►
- Learning Resources
Right now you can only click back at the beginning of the course, not able to click on the sections. This function is avaliable on the 2013/2014 archive.
This is the archive:

Dear Samantha,
Looking at your iBSc in Neuroscience area, I suspect there are a couple of things going on. The major one is that the course on the archive and the course on the live QMplus system are using two different course formats. The archive is using "collapsed topics" and the live system is using the new "grid" format which was introduced as part of the upgrade. This isn't something that would have happened as a result of the upgrade, the course format has been deliberately changed.
The grid format makes your course area look and behave differently. If you want things to go back to the way they were, you will have to change your course format back to "collapsed topics". You do this through the "Edit settings..." item in the "Settings" block on the course area.

Hi Gill,
Thank you.I just changed the format, and it is still the same.
We will stick to the current layout and not revert back to use the same function.
Kind Regards,
Samantha

Dear Samantha,
Although we've communicated about this outside of QMplus Hub, I just wanted to complete the conversation online just in case anyone has been waiting with bated breath!
So, for the benefits of anyone who has been following the conversation, the underlying issue here has turned out to be the functionality of what is known as the "breadcrumb" on QMplus. This is the navigation mechanism that appears towards the top of the page in QMplus and provides you with:
- context, a way of being able to see where you are in the QMplus structure
- a navigation mechanism, being able to click on parts of the breadcrumb to jump to particular places in QMplus.
Here's an example of the breadcrumb on QMplus now. In this case I have navigated to a forum within a topic section within a module area.
It is possible to click on any part of the breadcrumb to navigate to another part of QMplus, with the exception of the item in the red box. This relates to a section or topic in the course area and is not clickable.
It is the case that this item used to be clickable in QMplus, up until the 2014/15 academic year however it never worked with the collapsed topics format.
Clicking on the section/topic title in the breadcrumb, would not take you to the section, it would take you to the home page of the module.
Hopefully this explains what is going on here. We don't have any plans to make the item clickable again as it never worked very well in the first place.
