Export icons not showing on Turnitin summary page
17 November 2015, 12:26
I and a number of teachers do not see the option to export submission files when a Turnitin Assignment area's Post Date has not been passed.
As a School we have a policy that sets the post date to end-of-day 10 June 2016 - this is so students are able to view their assignment submissions, and their corresponding originality report, throughout the academic year.
It is possible to obtain submitted assignment files and have the export icons show via what feels like a workaround: in order to do this the Post Date has to be set in the past.
This isn't ideal, as it needs to be performed upon requiring a bulk file export, after which the June 11th zero hour post date needs to be applied again.
Does anyone have any idea of why this is the case, and if it can be avoided?

Hi Has,
Looking into this, it appears as though your current workaround is the only one that has been identified by others, for downloading Turnitin assignments in bulk (before the post date has lapsed).
I see the University of the Arts has documented this in their support guide.
I will look into this further. Please can anyone comment if they have found an alternative to this workaround.

Thanks Richard, that's helpful. I'll get this out to our Teaching colleagues.

Hi Has,
Are you using anonymous marking in Turnitin? If so, you will not be able to bulk download student submissions until after the post date. I remember reading somewhere that this is a feature of Turnitin as the bulk download "breaks anonymity" (it puts the students' names on the downloaded files).
If you're not using anonymous marking, as far as I'm aware, the export icons should appear even if the post date is still in the future.
The post date in Turnitin controls the release of grades and feedback to the students and is important if you are using the Turnitin marking and feedback tool (GradeMark). If you have allowed students to see their originality reports, they should be able to see them no matter what the post date.

Hi Gill,
Yes, in almost all cases we are using anonymous marking in Turnitin. What you've explained seems to correlate with what I've seen to be the case across our Turnitin assignments - with those that don't have anonymous marking enabled, showing the download icon.
Thank you for the helpful information on GradeMark, and student viewability of their originality reports.
