Online Exams

Hi - does anyone have experience of running exams using the online text assessment option? I'd like to do a timed assessment with students in a computer lab with access to the internet and therefore QMPlus. I was wondering whether it made sense to have them upload a word document or just bang it straight into QMPlus. Can I still use Turnitin with this option?
Also, is anyone aware of guidance on doing these kinds of exams from QMUL? I came across some that UCL puts out for its staff and some best practice for e-assessment generally (I hadn't realised there was a British Standard for this sort of thing...).
Cheers

Hi Dominic,
I don't have any experience with the online text assessment option in QMplus specifically. It looks like you can't use Turnitin with this option.
The E-Learning Unit did used to help out with running end of year exams online for the School of Business and Mangagement. We did this on Blackboard and we stopped doing it a while ago as there were a variety of issues surrounding it. We did have a variety of guidance documents which we gave out to staff, I can try to dig these out if they would be useful. These exams usually consisted of a multiple choice part and a short essay part. The Blackboard quiz tool was used for this. IT Services could set up computer labs to run in "kiosk mode" which meant that students only had access to Blackboard.
The MBBS programme have made use of Blackboard for online testing, I don't know if they are still doing it. The E-Learning Unit weren't involved with these ones, folks in the Medical School set them up and administered them.
There was supposed to be a project to investigate the possibility of having an "enterprise" system for these types of online exams. We didn't investigate it as part of the QMplus project as a lot of the issues we had previously were linked to trying to use a live teaching system to deliver exams. I believe the system that was mentioned was Questionmark Perception. However, I have to admit that I have no knowledge of whether this project is happening or what stage it has got to. I can try to find out for you. I believe Tricia Revest in the Medical School was involved with it so she may be able to shed more light on that. She would also be able to tell you about what the MBBS programme do with their online exams which might be useful to you.

Hello
Just to add to Gill's comments the medical school are indeed going to use Question Mark perception to deliver exactly what you describe replacing what we have previously done within blackboard. The aim is I understand for this to become a college wide service in year 14/15. If you want to see how it might work contact Tricia Revest in the medical school
