Using resources in multiple modules
13 June 2012, 16:11
Hello,
I'm keen to know how you can create content in one module and then use it in another e.g. if I create a quiz, how can I then use this quiz in another module?
Thanks,
Paula

Following on from this, Paula and I are working on a module together. Is there a way paula can, say, use a quiz or some other resource in our combined module from another module she's designed?
Or even if we weren't doing something together but I thought something in one of her modules would be helpful, would there be a way to share this?
And how would we go about allowing other 'administrators' to work on the module we're working on?
Cheers

Hi Dominic and Paula,
I am definitely not an expert on this but from what I know so far, Moodle does not have a convenient way of moving quizzes from one course/module to another. The process of moving quizzes in-between Topics in the same Course however is far far easier and can be done easily with the help of the Move Arrow beside the Quiz Name.
I can think of one lengthy way of moving Quizzes from one course to another -
1. Export the Category containing the quiz questions from Course 1's Question Bank (in Moodle XML or GIFT format).
2. Then Import the Category into the Question Bank of Course 2.
3. Build an empty Quiz in Course 2.
4. Add the imported questions from the Question Bank into the newly built quiz.
I have not attempted doing this yet but will get back to you soon with a more decisive answer.
I hope a senior member comes in and clarifies this for certain.
I will get back to you soon.
Tajwar
P.S : Now that I am thinking about it, there might be another way of moving quizzes. But it is more dangerous as it has the potential to cause loss of data in the 2nd Course... I wish I could test this out in a mock course and find out if it works. But I just joined as an E Learning assistant last week and right now I have access to Courses that are already full of data. And I cannot risk testing this using those courses... I will get in touch with my superiors and ask them if I can be allowed to test this out in a mock/empty Course.

This is coming up a lot and we need this. So many of the courses in SMD could benefit from sharing all sorts of resources and activities. When I had the training with other members of the LI the trainer said it was possible to create a course and then share resources from it. Exporting and importing is not the solution. Could someone please find this out as soon as possible. Thanks Gary Senior Learning Technologist Blizard Institute15 June 2012, 1:40
Hi All,
Option 1
The normal method of moving quizzes is to use the backup/restore course option normally found in the settings menu as it will allow you to select activities or resources in your course you wish to copy such as a quiz and then restore these activities or resources into another course, provided that you save the backup in your private files area so you can access the backup file to restore in another course.
However, reviewing the Course Leader role permissions I have noted that the backup/restore option is not available for this role in the settings menu, so please do email the e-learning support team at elu-support@qmul.ac.uk with your requirements including the source and destination course for the quiz and the name of the quiz you which to copy over to another course.
Option 2
Another option is to move your quiz questions to a higher catergory in the system like the System: 'Default for System' category or your School related system category which all courses who wish to use the quiz questions belong to e.g Category: Miscellaneous: 'Default for Miscellaneous' (Paula) or Category: Medicine and Dentistry / Dentistry: 'Default for Medicine and Dentistry / Denistry' (Dominic). Doing this it will enable you to share quiz questions via the question banks between all courses under the specific School related system category or by every course in the system through the System: 'Default for System' category.
To do this simply, navigate into your course and do the following:
Part One
- From the Settings menu select Question bank > Questions.
- On the QUESTION BANK screen, from the Select a category: drop down menu, choose the category where the quiz questions you would like to share reside. (normally named default_for_Course Code and will display the amount of questions in brackets (31) etc).
- At the bottom of the QUESTION BANK screen, click on the link SHOW all..., in order to display all questions available to share.
- Check (tick) the boxes next to the questions you would like to share.
- Then from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page, select either the System: 'Default for System' (Share questions with all courses on the system) or the School related system category e.g Category: Miscellaneous: 'Default for Miscellaneous' (Paula) or Category: Medicine and Dentistry / Dentistry: 'Default for Medicine and Dentistry / Denistry' (Dominic).
- Then click on the "MOVE TO" button, which will move all your questions to a higher category in the system which should now allow your questions to be shared by other courses who fall within the category you moved the questions to.
Part Two
- Navigate into the course you wish to share quiz questions.
- Click on the TURN EDITING ON button in the top right corner.
- Click on Add an activity from the drop menu displayed in the centre of the course page.
- Choose Quiz
- Complete the required quiz settings/information on the ADD A NEW QUIZ page and then click on the SAVE AND DISPLAY button at the bottom of the page.
- On the next screen click on the EDIT QUIZ button.
- On the EDITING QUIZ screen, navigate to the 'Select a category' drop down menu on the right side of the screen and then select either the System: 'Default for System' or the School related system category e.g Category: Miscellaneous: 'Default for Miscellaneous' (Paula) or Category: Medicine and Dentistry / Dentistry: 'Default for Medicine and Dentistry / Denistry' (Dominic), where you saved your questions.
- Then click on the link SHOW all..., in order to display all questions available to share.
- Check (tick) the boxes next to the questions you would like to share.
- Then click on the ADD to QUIZ button, which will add these questions to quiz.
Please remember to use the options available to re-order, set maximum and individual grades for your questions according to your requirements and save these options as you go along.
Please note Moodle is more of a collaborative learning management system and therefore it encourages the sharing of objects that make up a course resource (repository) or an activity (quiz questions) rather than duplicating a whole course or activity (quiz), although as mentioned above this can also be achieved through the quick backup and restore process that we offer.
I hope this helps.

I researched this a bit.
According to the Moodle Documentation,
http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Import_course_data
We can use the Import function to re-use activities and resources from another course. (Screenshots and more details in the link above)
However, I believe you need to be an instructor of both courses. If you are an admin, then you can probably pull from any course.
And I put my first method of Exporting & Importing Question Bank Categories to the test. I was successful in moving Quiz data from one course to another.
But it is a lengthy process, and builds up heavily on the use of a Question Bank. But most importantly this process only applies to re-using Quizzes in other courses, and not other activities or resources.
Using the Import Function most definitely seems like the proper way to re-use resources and activities from other courses.
Someone who has the right permissions in QMPlus courses or is the Administrator should be able to help us with this important issue.
EDIT:
Sorry Yemi, I seem to have posted this at the same time as you. I think your post definitely brings forth the solution.

Thanks guys, However, what we were told it could do was link. That is, when content changes on one it would update on another. It was explained that if we created a hidden course with the shared content we could link to it. If you could find out how this is done that would be excellent. Thanks Gary15 June 2012, 11:08
Hi Gary,
Thanks for providing us with more information on your requirements, I now have a solution.
Linking to a hidden course containing a quiz won't work as students will not be able to view or access a hidden course and the course would have to be a guest course allowing every student access to the course unless both sets of students are enrolled on this course in order for the link to work and take the student automatically into the course containing the quiz.
Based on your requirements I believe you need to create a 'meta-course' containing the shared resources such as quizzes, in addition to your independant courses. How the 'meta-course' works is, when a student enrols on either one of your independent courses they will automatically be enrolled onto the 'meta-course' containing the shared resources such as quizzes.
The only issue is you will need to access this meta-course to obtain your student quiz responses and you will need to filter your student responses from other tutors students responses as the quiz is shared amoungst these students, would this be OK?
I'm on leave at the moment, but I am happy to book some time with you next week to help you set this up and talk you through the process.
Many thanks
Yemi

Hi Yemi,
Thanks for your help.
I'm on leave today too.
Why don't we touch base on Monday and work out a time. It would be great to meet up.
Enjoy the rest of your break.
Regards
Gary

Hi Gary,
If you are talking about a scenario where you have e.g. one copy of a document which is used in multiple courses and when the "central" copy is updated, the updates are seen everywhere then this is not possible in QMplus as we have it at the moment.
The core Moodle developers have made a concious decision to keep content management functionality like this out of Moodle itself (if you are feeling brave you can try Googling "Moodle 2.0 File Management" to see some of the discussions that have arisen from this). Instead they have made it easy for Moodle to integrate with repositories which provide full content management functionality. I believe there is a plan to investigate using Sharepoint as a repository for QMplus, especially for the School of Medicine and Dentistry who have some very specific requirements around content management. Other repositories that are used with Moodle in other places are Equella and Alfresco.
We were aware of this limitation when we chose to go with Moodle and Mahara with the thinking being that the content management requirements needed to be looked at seperately. It was felt that the advantages of the solution in other areas outweighed the deficiencies in terms of content management.
