The Geography degree at Queen Mary offers a number of innovative opportunities to put theory into practice in the local area. In part, this is done through a long-standing relationship between the School of Geography and the non-profit organisation London Citizens.

If you are a human geography undergraduate student you will be given a hands-on learning experience, grasping research methods through practical application when working with the East London branch of London Citizens during the second year of your studies. In addition, this opportunity develops your understanding of citizenship and provides invaluable skills for future employment.

If you are a post-graduate student taking the MA or Postgraduate Certificate in Community Organising you will be working on a five month placement working as a community organiser with Citizens UK.​

If you are keen to take things further, the school offers the chance to volunteer with one of the member groups of London Citizens in east London, or to help support the Shuffle community arts Festivals held at the Community Land Trust at St Clements Hospital, Bow Road.You can also take up a two-day training course in community organising and leadership skills, or take a similar course on campus. From 2013, there has been an active QMCitizens group on campus and this is another way to develop your engagement in the local community and to deepen your experience of working with Citizens UK.
