Week 4 –

This week’s politics seminar was interesting as we started to merge both the theories we had learnt to some issues such as the refugee crisis. I enjoyed discussing these and being able to see a wider perspective and the different views each individual had. It was interesting to see that most people had views which were not entirely based on one theory such as conservatism, but a mixture of theories.

I use to sit there while I was reading in preparation for the politics seminar and think to myself, why on earth do I need to learn this? What has socialism or liberalism have anything to do with global health? Now it is finally making sense and I am especially excited for next week where we will start to apply our knowledge of theories to more issues that concern global health.

This week in Research and Wring we discussed the ‘reflective journal’ I said that I did not enjoy it has no structure. Now reflecting on it and looking back in hindsight it is good to reflect on experiences and you’re learning journey. Especially because there is dramatic change from the routine behaviour of study I am used to. Sarah also discussed the idea that our learning styles change and evolve. I used to be a auditory learner and enjoyed talking to myself in order to remember information, but that may not be the case now. That means I need to start experimenting new ways of revising and remembering information. I have to add that the research and writing seminars and lectures are really comforting to see that the academic issues I face are common and there are simple solutions to these. These sessions in particular Sarah have been useful for the tips given regarding studying. When I learnt that this module formed a section of the degree, my instant reaction was “I don’t see the point in this” but I can gladly laugh at myself now as I value this module and the knowledge and practice that I am gaining from it. In this time period I have realised my individual bad habits that I need to avoid but also skills which I will need for the rest of my academic life.
