Graphite's anisotropic nature arises from its unique crystal structure, which is based on hexagonal basal planes. This planar arrangement means that graphite exhibits different physical properties depending on the direction in which they are measured. As a result, the bulk properties of graphite are influenced by the orientation and alignment of these crystals.

Anisotropic Graphite
- Definition: In anisotropic graphite, the crystals are predominantly aligned in a specific direction.
- Characteristics: This alignment leads to significant differences in properties along different axes. For example, electrical and thermal conductivity are much higher along the basal planes compared to the perpendicular direction.
Isotropic Graphite
- Definition: Isotropic graphite is characterized by a random orientation of its graphite crystals.
- Characteristics: Due to this random orientation, isotropic graphite exhibits uniform properties in all directions. It generally has lower anisotropy and is more uniform in properties like strength, conductivity, and thermal expansion。
